Shelf life of automotive gasoline: everything you need to know

In peaceful times, this question rarely crossed anyone’s mind, but today it takes on new significance: what is the shelf life of automotive gasoline? Let’s delve into the details.

Why does gasoline age? From a scientific standpoint, gasoline cannot be stored for extended periods. It loses its volatile fractions, oxidizes, and accumulates resinous deposits. In old gasoline, important additives, including detergents and anti-knock agents, break down and precipitate. This can lead to poor engine starting, reduced power, and dangerous knocking.

How long can gasoline be stored? In Ukraine, commercial gasoline must have a minimum shelf life of 6 months according to legislation. However, if the fuel is stored correctly and kept free from contaminants, experts believe it can remain of good quality for up to three years. To extend the shelf life, follow these guidelines:

Store gasoline in a tightly sealed and light-proof container. Add a fuel stabilizer before storage to help prevent the formation of resins and deposits in the engine. Keep the gasoline container in a cool, dry place, away from heat sources and direct sunlight.

Finally, always purchase high-quality gasoline from reputable refineries.
