Bioethanol at Ukrainian Gas Stations: What Will Change Starting May 1, 2025
Starting May 1, 2025, all gasoline sold at Ukrainian gas stations will be required to contain bioethanol. According to Law No. 3356-d, the share of liquid biofuel in gasoline must be no less than 5%.
What is bioethanol and why is it important?
Bioethanol is an alcohol produced from biomass (such as corn, sugar beets, or grain). It is used as an eco-friendly additive to traditional gasoline. This approach reduces greenhouse gas emissions and makes fuel more environmentally sustainable.
Using bioethanol is nothing new for Ukrainian drivers: all gasoline imported from Europe already contains it. However, until now, Ukrainian legislation did not require domestic fuel producers and suppliers to include bioethanol in their gasoline.
European standards in action
This update is part of Ukraine’s commitment to fulfilling international obligations within the framework of its accession to the Energy Community. The law is based on the provisions of Directive 2009/28/EC of the European Parliament and Council, which promotes the use of energy from renewable sources.
The goal is to gradually increase the share of "green" energy in the transportation sector. In the future, the share of bioethanol in gasoline is expected to rise to 15%.
Should drivers be worried?
Not at all. Modern vehicles are fully compatible with bioethanol-blended fuel. This has been standard practice in Europe for many years, and Ukrainian cars have already been running on such fuel — most drivers just didn’t know it.
On the contrary, this is great news:
- for the environment
- for the development of Ukraine’s agricultural and bioenergy sectors
- and for our image as an eco-conscious European nation
Now your car’s fuel tank is officially on a healthy lifestyle!
